How do I renew a Certificate? Print

  • 33

To renew an existing certificate, a new certificate has to be issued for the same domain (common name).

Process

  • Purchase the same SSL certificate from the same certificate provider (e.g., Symantec, Geotrust, or RapidSSL). Once purchased, the certificate must be configured with the same information as the original certificate to be processed as a renewal, except for the CSR, which must be new. The certificate cannot be renewed earlier than 90 days prior to the expiration date.  Please refer to the knowledge base articles on "Generating a Certificate Signing Request, (CSR)..." for more details.
  • Comodo certificates cannot be renewed earlier than 60 days prior to the expiration date, and cannot be applied if the new SSL goes over 5 years.
  • The certificate provider's support team will check the order information. Depending on the verification procedure, they may request additional documentation.

Renewal date and Expiration date

When you renew your certificate issued by Symantec, GeoTrust, or RapidSSL, the new expiration date will be 12 months from the date of purchase, plus the remaining days left on the SSL being replaced.
