What is a Fully Qualified Domain Name? Print

  • 32

Root domains, TLD extensions, and sometimes subdomains comprise a 'fully qualified domain name', (often abbreviated as FQDN).  A fully qualified domain name is required to point to services on the internet, such as websites and email.  Without an FQDN, you would need to type the IP address of the service you want to reach.

Examples of Fully Qualified Domain Names:

  • cloudservices.compudata.ca.
  • compudata.ca.
  • maps.google.com.
